An Iyaganku Chief Magistrates’ Court in Ibadan, Oyo State, on Wednesday sentenced two brothers, Kabiru Jimoh and Ahmed Jimoh, to one year imprisonment each for assaulting a police officer while she was carrying out her lawful duties.
Chief Magistrate Mrs. Olabisi Ogunkanmi handed down the sentence after the defendants pleaded guilty to the charges brought against them.
The court convicted the brothers on charges bordering on conspiracy, obstruction of duty, threat to life, and assault.
In addition to the prison terms, the magistrate ordered each convict to pay N50,000 as compensation to the complainant. No option of fine was granted.
Earlier, the prosecution counsel, Police Constable Olapeju Durodola, told the court that the incident occurred when Police Officer Helen Ojo was carrying out an assignment to recover a child in connection with a paternity dispute.
Durodola alleged that the defendants obstructed the officer in the course of her duty, physically assaulted her, and threatened to attack her with a broken bottle.
According to the prosecutor, Ojo sustained injuries during the assault.
She further stated that the offences committed by the convicts contravened Sections 197, 252, 351, 356(2), and 516 of the Criminal Law of Oyo State, 2000.
The court subsequently convicted and sentenced the two brothers based on their guilty plea.
