The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has directed members of the Super Falcons’ technical crew to step down with immediate effect following the team’s disappointing campaign at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.

The federation announced the decision on Monday through its official X account, saying its Executive Committee had instructed members of the technical crew of the senior women’s national team to vacate their positions immediately.

The decision comes after a campaign that ended Nigeria’s hopes of retaining the continental title and, more significantly, securing qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Nigeria went into the Morocco tournament as defending African champions and one of the continent’s most successful women’s football teams. The Super Falcons have historically been a dominant force in African football and had established an unbroken record of appearances at the Women’s World Cup since the competition was inaugurated in 1991.

Failure to qualify for the 2027 edition therefore represents a major setback for the team and Nigerian women’s football.

The outcome has also raised questions about the team’s technical direction, squad development and preparations for major international competitions. The NFF’s decision to remove the technical crew signals the federation’s intention to make significant changes rather than continue with the existing structure.

The immediate challenge for the football authorities is to put a new technical arrangement in place without allowing the transition to affect preparations for the next qualifying campaign.

The Super Falcons are expected to begin their campaign for the 2028 Olympic Games in October, with Comoros listed as their opening opponent.

The Olympic qualification programme provides the team with an opportunity to begin rebuilding after the WAFCON disappointment. However, the NFF will have to act quickly to appoint a technical team, establish a clear programme and give the players adequate preparation ahead of the qualifiers.

Beyond the immediate coaching changes, the federation faces the broader task of restoring confidence in the national team and ensuring that Nigeria remains competitive against emerging women’s football powers on the continent.

The Super Falcons have traditionally been regarded as the leading team in African women’s football, but the growth of the game across the continent has increased competition for continental honours.

The NFF’s latest decision could therefore mark the beginning of a wider rebuilding process aimed at strengthening the team’s technical structure and improving its long-term competitiveness.

For the players, the focus will now shift to the Olympic qualifiers and the opportunity to respond on the pitch. For the federation, the priority will be finding a technical solution capable of producing immediate results while laying the foundation for a more consistent Super Falcons side.

The coming weeks are expected to be critical as the NFF begins the process of determining the team’s next technical leadership and preparing the Super Falcons for their next international assignment.
