Defending champions Argentina began their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign in impressive fashion with a commanding 3-0 victory over Algeria in their Group J opener at Kansas City Stadium on Tuesday night.

The South Americans dominated possession and controlled the tempo from the outset, with captain Lionel Messi delivering a masterclass performance to inspire the victory.

Messi opened the scoring in the 17th minute, giving Argentina a deserved lead after a bright start. The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner continued to torment the Algerian defence and doubled Argentina’s advantage shortly after the hour mark before completing his hat-trick in the 76th minute to seal all three points for the reigning world champions.

Algeria battled hard throughout the contest but struggled to create meaningful opportunities against a disciplined Argentine backline. The North Africans attempted to threaten on the counterattack but lacked the cutting edge required to trouble the defending champions.

Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni praised his side’s discipline and attacking efficiency after the match, while also commending Messi’s leadership and match-winning display.

Beyond securing three valuable points, the victory carried historic significance for Messi. The 38-year-old became the first player to appear in six FIFA World Cup tournaments and equalled Miroslav Klose’s all-time men’s World Cup scoring record of 16 goals. It was also Messi’s first-ever World Cup hat-trick and the 61st hat-trick of his illustrious career.

The result places Argentina in a strong position in Group J as they seek to defend the title they won in 2022. Algeria, meanwhile, will need a positive result in their next group match to keep their hopes of reaching the knockout stage alive.
