Nigeria’s Stallions made an emphatic start to their Africa Men’s Sevens Series campaign in Kampala, Uganda, on Saturday, defeating Ghana 28-5 in their opening Pool A match.
The victory puts Nigeria in a strong position at the start of its campaign as the Stallions pursue a place in the 2027 World Rugby HSBC SVNS 3.
The Nigeria Rugby Football Federation (NRFF), in a statement issued in Abuja, said the Nigerian team controlled the match from the opening whistle, combining pace, intensity and sustained pressure to keep Ghana on the defensive.
“From the opening whistle, the Stallions came out firing, bringing intensity, pace and relentless pressure to the contest,” the federation said.
Nigeria converted its dominance into points as the Stallions maintained pressure throughout the encounter to secure a convincing 28-5 victory.
The team will next face Morocco in its second Pool A fixture.
Morocco lost its opening match 19-12 to Zimbabwe and will be looking to recover against Nigeria, while the Stallions will seek another victory before meeting Zimbabwe in their final pool game.
In other matches on Saturday, Zambia edged Tunisia 10-7, while hosts Uganda defeated Senegal 38-0.
Eight countries are participating in the Kampala tournament. Nigeria, Zimbabwe, Ghana and Morocco make up Pool A, while Uganda, Zambia, Tunisia and Senegal are in Pool B.
The tournament will determine Africa’s qualification place for the 2027 World Rugby HSBC SVNS 3.
