Bayero University, Kano (BUK), is set to host an international conference bringing together academics, policymakers, business leaders and development experts to examine strategies for tackling insecurity, strengthening governance and promoting inclusive economic development in Africa.

The three-day International Conference and Doctoral Colloquium, organised by the university’s Faculty of Economics and Management Sciences (FEMS), will hold from November 3 to 5, 2026.

The Chairman of the Local Organising Committee (LOC), Prof. Kabir Tahir-Hamid, disclosed this on Friday at a press conference in Kano, saying the conference would explore practical approaches to building economic resilience and securing lasting peace.

According to him, the theme, “Sustainable Governance and the Green Economy: Strategies for Addressing Insecurity and Promoting Inclusive Development in Africa,” reflects the interconnected challenges of insecurity, poverty, unemployment, environmental degradation and economic instability confronting Nigeria and other African countries.

He said the conference would provide a platform for stakeholders to exchange research findings, interrogate policy options and develop practical solutions to the continent’s development challenges.

The Vice-Chancellor of BUK, Prof. Haruna Musa, will serve as Chief Host, while the Chairman of the Bank of Industry, Dr Mansur Mukhtar, will chair the occasion.

Keynote presentations will be delivered by the Chairman of Nigerian Exchange Group Plc, Dr Umaru Kwairanga, and the Director-General of the National Agency for the Great Green Wall, Mr Saleh Abubakar.

The first lead paper will be presented by Prof. Auwalu Haruna, Director of the Business School, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, while Elvis Tangam, Climate, Peace and Security Adviser to the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), will deliver the second presentation.

Tahir-Hamid said deliberations would focus on strengthening governance, institutional accountability and sectoral effectiveness, while examining the links between insecurity, economic development, environmental sustainability and social inclusion.

Other areas of discussion will include green growth, sustainable investment, climate finance and responsible resource management.

He stressed that universities had a responsibility to generate evidence-based knowledge capable of shaping public policy and addressing societal challenges.

“Nigeria and Africa require collective action, innovative thinking and practical solutions,” he said.

The conference is expected to contribute to ongoing policy conversations on how sustainable governance and green economic strategies can support peacebuilding, economic diversification and equitable development across the continent.
