The President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Monica Dongban-Mensem, has constituted the Delta State Election Petition Tribunal to hear petitions arising from the National and State Houses of Assembly by-elections held on Sept. 19.
The Tribunal Secretary, Mr Akawu Bambur, disclosed this in a statement made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Asaba.
According to Bambur, the tribunal was constituted pursuant to the constitutional powers vested in the Court of Appeal President under the 1999 Constitution, as amended.
He said the constitution of the tribunal was guided by Sections 285(2) and (3), as well as Paragraphs 1 and 2 of the Sixth Schedule to the Constitution.
It also relied on Sections 134(2) and (3) of the Electoral Act.
The tribunal will handle petitions challenging the conduct and outcomes of the National and State Houses of Assembly by-elections conducted in Delta on Sept. 19.
The Delta State Secretariat of the tribunal is located at the Multi-Door Court House, High Court of Justice Complex, Asaba.
The establishment of the tribunal provides a formal judicial channel for candidates and political parties seeking to challenge electoral outcomes in accordance with Nigeria’s electoral laws.
