One person was killed and three others injured after a man opened fire during a marriage ceremony, popularly known as a “DJ” event, in Tudun Yola, Kano State.
The Kano State Police Command confirmed the incident, which occurred on Aug. 16, and said a 34-year-old suspect, Rabiu Mukhtar, had been arrested in connection with the shooting.
The Command’s Public Relations Officer, CSP Abdullahi Haruna-Kiyawa, said Mukhtar allegedly used a pump-action gun to shoot four people at the event.
According to him, the police recovered the firearm from the suspect, while the victims were rushed to Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital, Kano, for treatment.
The victims were identified as Sadiq Abubakar, Umar Rabiu, Muhammad Sadisu and Aliyu Mustapha. Haruna-Kiyawa said Mustapha later died in the hospital, while the other three victims were responding to treatment.
The police spokesperson added that Mukhtar and another suspect were apprehended and taken to the Command Headquarters in Bompai for investigation.
He said preliminary findings indicated that the incident was triggered by the playing of music that some attendees reportedly disliked.
Haruna-Kiyawa further said Mukhtar told investigators that he opened fire after hearing that thugs, locally known as “Yan daba”, were approaching the venue.
He said the suspects would be prosecuted upon completion of the investigation.
