France booked their place in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a convincing 3-0 victory over Sweden on Tuesday, producing a dominant display that underlined their status as one of the tournament favourites.

Didier Deschamps’ side controlled proceedings from the outset, enjoying the lion’s share of possession and pinning Sweden deep inside their own half. Despite creating several promising opportunities, Les Bleus were forced to wait until the stroke of half-time to make their superiority count.

Captain Kylian Mbappé broke the deadlock in the 45th minute, finishing clinically after being picked out by Ousmane Dembélé to hand France a deserved lead going into the break.

France maintained the momentum after the restart, increasing the tempo and continuing to dictate play. Their pressure paid off eight minutes into the second half when Bradley Barcola doubled the advantage, calmly finishing after an excellent assist from Michael Olise.

Sweden attempted to mount a response, but France’s disciplined defence comfortably contained their attacks while the French frontline remained dangerous on the counter.

Mbappé sealed the victory in the 74th minute, completing his brace with another composed finish after Olise supplied his second assist of the evening.

“It was a great team performance. We showed focus and quality,” Mbappé said after the match.

Olise emerged as one of France’s standout performers, orchestrating attacks and creating two goals, while Barcola’s composed finish capped another impressive display from the young forward.

Sweden struggled to cope with France’s pace, movement and creativity throughout the contest. Although they defended resolutely for long periods, they created few meaningful opportunities against one of the tournament’s strongest teams.

The comprehensive victory sends France into the Round of 16 brimming with confidence as they continue their pursuit of a third World Cup title. Sweden, meanwhile, bow out after being comprehensively outclassed.

France will face Paraguay in the Round of 16 as they look to continue their march towards the 2026 FIFA World Cup crown.
