The Managing Director/CEO of the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, has commended Lagos Reporters for drawing public attention to an incident of indiscriminate waste dumping in Ibeju-Lekki.
Gbadegesin urged residents and media platforms to continue documenting and reporting environmental violations, saying credible information could support investigation and enforcement.
He spoke while reacting to a video shared by Lagos Reporters on social media showing individuals dumping a large quantity of waste from a truck along a roadside in Ibeju-Lekki.
The LAWMA boss described the report as a commendable contribution to efforts to curb indiscriminate waste disposal in Lagos State. However, he noted that while the footage clearly captured the act, it did not show the vehicle’s registration number or other identifying details that could assist authorities in tracking the perpetrators.
He urged members of the public and media organisations to capture, where safe, details such as vehicle registration numbers, company names or logos, the exact location, date and approximate time of incidents, as well as clear photographs or video footage.
Gbadegesin cautioned residents against confronting suspected offenders or attempting to stop moving vehicles while documenting violations.
“We want to see more of this; we want Lagosians to keep their eyes open and continue to document and report indiscriminate dumping and other environmental violations,” he said.
He noted that the more useful details a report contains, the easier it becomes for relevant authorities to act.
Gbadegesin said the incident reinforced LAWMA’s position that the persistent appearance of waste on road medians was fundamentally a behavioural issue requiring collective action.
He reaffirmed LAWMA’s commitment to following up on credible reports and taking appropriate action against individuals or organisations found culpable, stressing that maintaining a cleaner Lagos remained a shared responsibility among government agencies, waste operators, businesses, communities and residents.
