NiMet Predicts 3-Day Dust Haze From Friday To Sunday

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has predicted dust haze from Friday to Sunday across the country. NiMet’s weather outlook released in Abuja anticipated Dust haze with localised visibility of less than or equal to 1000m over the northern states throughout. “The forecast period with chances of thunderstorms over parts of Taraba in the afternoon/evening hours. Sunny skies with few cloud patches are expected over the North Central in the morning. “Localized thunderstorms are expected over parts of Benue, Kogi and Kwara during the afternoon/evening hours. “Cloudy skies with intervals of sunshine are expected over the Inland states of the South and the Coastal areas in the morning with chances of thunderstorms over parts of Cross River and Akwa Ibom states,” it said. According to NiMet, thunderstorms are envisaged over parts of Osun, Oyo, Ogun, Ondo, Imo, Enugu, Ebonyi, Edo, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Lagos, Rivers, Bayelsa and Delta later in the day. The agency forecast sunny and hazy atmosphere over the Northern states on Saturday throughout the forecast period with prospects of thunderstorms over parts of Taraba state in the afternoon and evening hours. “Sunny skies with few cloud patches are anticipated over the North Central region during the morning hours. Later in the day, there are chances of localized thunderstorms over parts of Nasarawa, Kogi, Kwara and Benue. “Cloudy skies with intervals of sunshine are envisaged over the Inland states of the South and the Coastal areas in the morning with prospects of morning thunderstorms over parts of Rivers, Cross River and Akwa Ibom. “In the afternoon/evening hours, localized thunderstorms is anticipated over parts of Osun, Ogun, Oyo, Ondo, Edo, Imo, Enugu, Abia, Ebonyi, Anambra, Lagos, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Rivers and Delta states,” it said. It said sunny and hazy atmosphere is anticipated over the northern region on Sunday with solated thunderstorms over parts of Adamawa and Taraba during the afternoon and evening hours. “Sunny atmosphere with few patches of cloud is expected over the North Central region on Sunday during the morning hours. It envisaged isolated thunderstorms over parts of the Federal Capital Territory, Nasarawa, Kogi, Niger and Benue later in the day. It predicted a cloudy atmosphere with intervals of sunshine in the morning hours. “In the afternoon/evening hours, localised thunderstorms are envisaged over Oyo, Ondo, Ogun, Edo, Abia, Imo, Enugu, Delta, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, Bayelsa and Lagos states. “Dust particles are in suspension, public should take necessary precautions. People with Asthma and other respiratory issues should be cautious of the present weather situations. ” Night–time cold temperatures should be expected. Airline operators are advised to get updated weather reports from NiMet for effective planning in their operation.
NiMet Alerts Northern States On Deteriorating Visibility

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has alerted the public on the possibility of deterioration in visibility in some northern states as a result of dust haze propagated into the country from the source region. This is contained in a statement signed by Mr Muntari Ibrahim, NiMET’s General Manager of Public Affairs on Wednesday in Abuja. NiMet said stations in the source region from Chad (Faya-Largeau, Bol-Berim, Mongo, Abeche and Ndjamena) have been reporting horizontal visibility between other sources from Niger that share borders with northern Nigeria. “Diffa, Maine-Soroa, Goure, Bila, Maradi, Zinder and Birni-n- Konni have been reporting dust haze in poor visibility between 1000m and 3000 m since the last 24 hours. “Due to strong winds, the dust in suspension is expected to propagate to some states in the northern part of the country, which will further reduce horizontal visibility. “There are prospects of dust haze (in moderate to poor horizontal visibility) over the northern parts of the country, especially over Katsina, Kano, Nguru, Jigawa Potiskum and Maiduguri in the next 24 hours”, the statement said. NiMet advised members of the public to take necessary precautions due to dust particles presently in suspension over the atmosphere. The agency advised Individuals with respiratory ailments to protect themselves as the current weather condition is not good for their health. “Airline operators are also advised to avail themselves of weather reports from NiMet for effective planning in their operations. “NiMet will continue to monitor the weather and provide updates when necessary,” it said.

It envisaged thunderstorms over parts of Adamawa, Taraba, Sokoto, Zamfara, Katsina, Kebbi and Kaduna states in the morning hours. “Further into the day, isolated thunderstorms are expected over parts of Bauchi, Gombe, Adamawa, Taraba and Kaduna states. “Thunderstorms are expected over parts of Nasarawa, the Federal Capital Territory, Niger, Kwara, Kogi and Benue states in the morning hours. “Later in the day, thunderstorms are envisaged over parts of Plateau, the Federal Capital Territory, Kwara, Niger and Nasarawa states,” it said. According to it, cloudy atmosphere is expected over the inland states of the South and the coastal states with chances of thunderstorms over parts of Osun, Oyo, Ekiti, Ogun, Lagos, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, Bayelsa and Cross River states in the morning hours. It forecast thunderstorms over parts of Bauchi, Kaduna and Zamfara states later in the day. “Cloudy atmosphere is anticipated over the North Central region with thunderstorms over parts of Niger, Kogi and Benue states in the morning hours. ”Later in the day, thunderstorms are envisaged over parts of Plateau, the Federal Capital Territory and Nasarawa states. “Cloudy atmosphere is expected over inland cities of South and coastal belt with prospects of thunderstorms over parts of Enugu, Awka, Ebonyi, Imo, Anambra, Cross River, Akwa Ibom and Lagos states in the morning hours.” NiMet envisaged thunderstorms and rains over parts of Ogun, Ondo, Oyo, Ekiti, Osun, Edo, Cross River, Rivers, Bayelsa, Lagos, Delta and Akwa Ibom states later in the day. The agency predicted cloudy skies on Thursday with sunshine intervals over the northern region inthe morning with prospects of thunderstorms over parts of Zamfara, Kaduna, Kebbi, Sokoto and Katsina states.According to it, cloudy atmosphere is anticipated over the North central region with chances of thunderstorms over parts of Kogi and Benue states in the morning hours. “Later in the day, isolated thunderstorms are expected over parts of Niger, the Federal Capital Territory and Plateau states. Cloudy atmosphere is expected over the inland cities of the South and the coastal states with few thunderstorms over parts of Oyo, Ogun and Lagos states in the morning hours. “Later in the day, thunderstorms are anticipated over parts of Enugu, Ekiti, Osun, Edo, Rivers, Delta and Bayelsa states,” it said. According to NiMet, moderate to heavy rainfall could lead to flash floods. The public is advised to take necessary caution, avoid driving and walking through flood waters. It advised the citizens to take necessary safety precautions as strong winds are likely to precede and accompany the thunderstorms. “Disaster Risk Managers, Agencies and individuals should be proactive, to avert loss of lives andproperty during the rainy season. “All Airline operators are advised to avail themselves of weather reports and alerts periodically from NiMet for effective planning for their operations,” it said.

NiMet envisaged cloudy skies on Sunday with sunshine intervals over the northern region with prospects of morning thunderstorms over parts of Adamawa, Taraba, Gombe and Bauchi states. “Later in the day, thunderstorms with strong winds and rains are anticipated across the region. “Cloudy atmosphere is expected over the North central region in the morning hours with chances of isolated thunderstorms over parts of Niger, Nasarawa, and the Federal Capital Territory. “Later in the day, widespread thunderstorms and rains are expected over the region,” it said. According to it, cloudy atmosphere is expected over the inland states of the South and the coastal states in the morning hours. The agency forecast intermittent rains over parts of Ebonyi, Abia, Anambra, Osun, Ekiti, Ondo, Edo, Delta, Cross River and Akwa Ibom states. It further forecast intermittent rains over most parts of the region later in the day.
