Akwa Ibom Assembly Denies Outrageous Bill to Jail Women Over Married Men!

A viral social media post claiming that the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly is planning to pass a law jailing women for sexual relationships with married men has been categorically dismissed as false and misleading. The post, reportedly shared by Facebook user Obiavel Albert Abigo, alleged that Deputy Governor Sen. Akon Eyakenyi was sponsoring the bill, which supposedly would punish women with 10 years in prison and impose a ₦2 million fine on men. But the House has hit back hard. In a strongly-worded statement on Monday, Jerry Otu, Chairman of the House Committee on Information, described the report as a “fabrication with no legislative basis”. He emphasized that the Assembly has never received, discussed, or considered any such bill, and that the Deputy Governor has no involvement whatsoever. “This is a malicious attempt to tarnish the image of both the Deputy Governor and the House of Assembly,” Otu said. “We urge the public to disregard this fake news and any commentaries circulating alongside it.” Otu further reassured citizens that the House remains firmly committed to its constitutional role of lawmaking, and warned that such mischievous reports will not undermine its integrity or distract from its legislative duties. This incident highlights the growing problem of viral misinformation, particularly on social media, where outrageous claims can spread faster than facts. The Akwa Ibom Assembly’s prompt rebuttal is a reminder to always verify news before sharing, especially when it concerns sensitive issues that can damage reputations.

2026 World Cup Qualifiers: Lesotho’s Crocodiles Hold Eagles In Uyo

The Super Eagles’ race to USA/Canada/Mexico 2026 commenced on Thursday with the three-time African champions held 1-1 at home in Uyo by the Crocodiles of Lesotho. Nigeria’s attacking line of stand-in captain Kelechi Iheanacho, Ademola Lookman, Taiwo Awoniyi and Victor Boniface threw stones and sticks at the opposition goal-area but an inspired goalkeeper Sekhoane Moerane, also the team captain, and his rearguard foiled all the attempts and frustrated spectators at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium. The home team could have fallen behind after 16 minutes when Tsepang Seeali fired point-blank at Francis Uzoho after a poor touch in the box by Alex Iwobi, playing uncharacteristically deep at the back, released the forward who saw his effort parried by Uzoho. At the other end, defender Jamilu Collins saw his close shot parried; Boniface headed over the sticks and Iheanacho saw a dipping shot from a 20-yard free-kick punched away by the magnificent Moerane. Awoniyi missed Nigeria’s best chance of the first period when dragging wide a pass by Boniface in the 36th minute, and Lookman watched in shock as his left-footed belter was parried away. In the second period, Iwobi saw his shot parried in the 52nd minute, and then three minutes later, the Crocodiles shot ahead when Uzoho failed to deal with the ball from a corner kick and Motlomelo Mkwanazi struck gold with a bullet header that sailed into the net. The Eagles stepped up a gear and Moerane had saved from Collins and Iheanacho watched his shot come back off the upright before Semi Ajayi nodded powerfully past the goal-tender from a corner kick by Iheanacho, for Nigeria’s leveller half-way into the second half. There were opportunities to hit the winner from promising free-kick positions, but it ended in a stalemate and both teams took a point each from the encounter ahead of the Day 2 clashes coming up this weekend. Nigeria will fly to the city of Butare in Rwanda to trade tackles with the Warriors of Zimbabwe at the Huye Stadium on Sunday.      

NDIC Lauds Judiciary’s Understanding Of Deposit Insurance Practice

The Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC) has commended the judiciary on its better understanding of the deposit insurance practice towards promoting stability of the nation’s financial system. NDIC Managing Director/Chief Executive, Mr. Bello Hassan gave the commendation in his welcome address at the 2023 Sensitization Seminar, organized by the Corporation in partnership with the National Judicial Institute (NJI) for Judges of the Federal High Courts with theme: “Strengthening Depositors Confidence in Banks and Other Financial Institutions through Speedy Dispensation of Justice”, held in Uyo, Akwa-Ibom State. Mr. Hassan stated that the overarching objective of the Deposit Insurance Scheme in Nigeria is to protect depositors in the event of failure of the insured institutions, thereby engendering confidence and curtailing the incidence of bank runs in the system. He however noted that in carrying out its mandate efficiently, the Corporation required an effective collaboration with the judiciary, in view of its critical role in resolving disputes that often arise from revocation of banking licences, liquidation of failed banks and termination of liquidation activities. While stating that the Corporation, since inception, has been confronted with many challenges such as misconception of its mandate and basic principles of Deposit Insurance, the NDIC Boss expressed gratitude that the seminar organized in collaboration with the NJI, has resulted in a better understanding of the Corporation’s distinct roles by members of the Bar and the Benchas well as speedy dispensation of cases involving banks in-liquidation for the sake of financial system stability in Nigeria. To deepen knowledge of the Deposit Insurance practice and law, Hassan disclosed that papers presented at previous editions of the annual events have been published by the Corporation under the title: “Law and Practice of Deposit Insurance in Nigeria’’ in two volumes to serve as a veritable reference material, adding that the publications are being distributed free of charge to our stakeholders.

NFF holds 79th Annual General Assembly in Uyo

The 79th General Assembly of Nigeria Football Federation will take place in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State on Sunday. The annual plenary of Nigeria’s football governors at all levels will commence with an opening ceremony that is expected to be graced by His Excellency, Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State, Minister of Sports Development, Senator John Owan Enoh and the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Alhaji Ismaila Abubakar. President of NFF, Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau will, alongside the Executive Committee that he heads, welcome the delegates composed of chairmen and secretaries of the 44 members of the NFF (including FA chairmen and secretaries of the 36 States and the FCT). Also expected are members of the Akwa Ibom State cabinet, eminent football stakeholders and NFF Management and Staff. The business session, which begins after the opening ceremony, will kick off fully with an address by the NFF President, and such regular matters such as suspension or expulsion of members (if applicable), activity report of the General Secretary, presentation of the consolidated and revised balance sheet and profit-and-loss statement, approval of the financial statements and the budget, and admission for membership (if applicable) are on the agenda. On the agenda as well are votes on proposals for amendments to the Statutes, the regulations governing the application of the Statutes and the Standing Orders of the General Assembly (if applicable), and discussion of proposals submitted by the Members and the Executive Committee. After the conclusion of the assembly, the delegates and other invited guests and stakeholders will proceed to the Godswill Akpabio Stadium for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations final-day qualifier between the Super Eagles and the Falcons and True Parrots of Sao Tome and Principe, which begins at 5pm. Nigeria, on 12 points and already qualified for next year’s continental showpiece in Cote d’Ivoire, need only the minimum win to secure leadership of their group ahead of Guinea Bissau’s Djurtus, who are on 10 points and host the Leone Stars of Sierra Leone in Bissau.
