Terrorists Abduct 87 Persons In Kaduna

Suspected terrorists have abducted about 87 people in a fresh attack on the Kajuru-Station community in Kajuru Local Government Area of Kaduna State. The latest attack was confirmed by a member of the Kajuru-Station Youths, Harisu Dari, on Monday. Harisu, said the terrorists stormed the village around 10 pm, breaking into some shops and stealing food items and other valuables. He explained that no contact has been established yet with the 87 locals abducted on Sunday night. “As of the time I visited the community this morning, security operatives have not been drafted to help restore the confidence of the villagers. “The villagers are traumatized by the sad development. The government needs to re-strategise in tackling these terrorists,” he said. The attack came barely two days after 15 women and a man were abducted in the Dogon-Noma community of the same local government. Kajuru and Chikun LGs had in the past two weeks become the hotbed of kidnapping, causing tension in the state. Recall that the terrorists had in two weeks kidnapped over 172 villagers in the area. However, the state Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Mansir Hassan is yet to respond as of the time of filing this report.

Senate Holds Closed-Door Meeting with Service Chiefs and Ministers on National Security

In response to the escalating state of insecurity across the nation, the Senate convened another closed-door executive session on Tuesday to receive a detailed security briefing from top military officials and federal ministers. The decision to transition into the executive session was prompted by a motion by Senate Leader Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, who sought to temporarily suspend regular proceedings to allow for the admission of invited guests. The guests granted access to the session comprised the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, along with the Ministers of Defence, Police Affairs, Interior, and Finance. Additionally, all Service Chiefs, the Inspector General of Police, and Directors-General of the Department of State Services (DSS) and the National Intelligence Agency (NIA) were present. Senate President, Godswill Akpiabio, in his opening remarks, underscored the significance of involving ministers responsible for overseeing the financial allocations to security agencies. Akpabio emphasized the pivotal role of adequate funding in facilitating the procurement of essential equipment necessary for combating security threats. Of notable presence was the Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun, whose insights were sought on avenues for financing critical security initiatives aimed at safeguarding lives and properties. Akpiabio reiterated that the invitation extended to the ministers and security chiefs was a response to numerous petitions received from constituents, demonstrating the Senate’s commitment to addressing the concerns of citizens. The interactive security briefing was framed within the context of the Senate’s oversight mandate, providing an opportunity for direct engagement with key stakeholders to assess the current security landscape and explore legislative interventions. Senators seized the opportunity to raise pertinent security-related queries and collaborated with relevant agencies to devise effective strategies for mitigating the nation’s security challenges.

FG Has Undertaken Comprehensive Efforts To Curb Terrorism -Defence Minister 

The Minister of Defence, Muhammad Badaru Abubakar, CON, mni has said that the Federal Government under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR, has undertaken Comprehensive efforts to curb the menace of terrorism and other forms of criminalities and restore normalcy to all parts of the country, especially in the North East geopolitical zone. He disclosed this during the book launch by the Nigerian Air Force, titled: “Terrorism and Counter-Terrorism in North East Nigeria: Emerging Perspectives and the Imperative of Airpower” recently in Abuja. The Minister stated that the Ministry of Defence as the vanguard of the national security has played a pivotal role in coordinating the Armed Forces and executing strategies to counter terrorism effectively. He added that there was the need for a multi-faceted approach of combining Military precision with socio- economic initiatives to address the root causes of radicalization. Speaking on the title of the Book launched, Badaru said that in a bid to pursue a whole society approach to the issue of terrorism, the book was developed by leveraging strong partnership between Nigerian Air Force and the academia. He commended the book launchers saying that it would serve a valuable resource for policymakers, Military Strategists and scholars in understanding the evolving dynamics of terrorism in Nigeria and to explore the imperative of airpower in the nation’s counter- terrorism efforts. The Minister said that the scourge of terrorism was not confined within national borders alone, but that it was a global challenge. “The Sahel region with its vast and diverse terrain, has become a hotspot for terrorist activities, posing a significant threat to regional stability. In this context, the collaboration of intergovernmental organizations including the African Union, Economic Community of West African States, the Lake Chad Basin Commission and others become imperative to address the root causes and manifestations of terrorism in the Sahel,” he said. The Special Guest of Honour, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR represented by the President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio in his address said that the book launch was not just an academic exercise but a call to action that would serve as a reminder that we have a shared responsibility to fight against terrorism and protect the lives and liberties of our fellow citizens. The Governor of Bornu State, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum who was in attendance appreciated the Armed Forces for exhibiting professionalism, synergy and commitments to ending insurgency. The host, the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Hassan Bala Abubakar noted that the book was developed in collaboration between the Nigerian Air Force and Babcock University to serve as a guiding light for policy makers, military strategists and practitioners in formulating holistic solutions that go beyond the realm of military operations.

Terrorists Kill 14, Injure 17 In Fresh Katsina Attack

In a disturbing incident, terrorists struck the peaceful community of Rugar Kusa in Musawa Local Government, Katsina State, resulting in the tragic loss of 14 lives and leaving 17 others injured. The attack, which extended for over an hour, occurred late Sunday night, with the assailants arriving at the village around 11:00 p.m. The unsuspecting community was in the final stages of a Maulud celebration, a customary observance held by followers of Kadiriyya, Tijjaniya, and Shi’ites to mark the birth date of Prophet Muhammad. Tragically, the festivities were disrupted when the terrorists, armed with guns, unleashed indiscriminate gunfire upon the gathering. A community member, speaking anonymously due to safety concerns, described the terrifying events. “Several people had retired for the night when the gunmen’s assault jolted even those in deep slumber. Some of the assailants encircled the procession, while others penetrated deeper into the community to perpetrate more violence. Many individuals, including those attending the Maulud procession, sought refuge in the nearby bush,” the witness explained. The aftermath of the attack revealed a grim scene, with 14 confirmed casualties, but concerns lingered regarding the fate of those who might have been abducted or remain unaccounted for. In the wake of the incident, a number of individuals with gunshot wounds were transported to the Ahmadi Rimi Orthopaedic and Special Hospital in Katsina for medical attention. The Katsina Police Command reported a slightly lower casualty count, stating that nine individuals lost their lives, while 16 others sustained injuries. According to Abubakar Sadik, the command’s spokesperson, seven people were initially killed during the attack, with two more succumbing to their injuries while receiving medical care. The North-western states of Katsina, Kaduna, Sokoto, Zamfara, and Kebbi have been grappling with a series of terrorist activities, underlining the pressing need for enhanced security and counter-terrorism measures in the region.

Nigerian Politicians, Elite Responsible For Continued Insecurity- Buratai

Former Chief Of Army Staff (COAS), Lt. General Tukur Buratai (retired), has accused politicians and the political elite for the prolonged insecurity that has plagued the nation since 2009. Speaking in an address at the 2023 National Public Service Lecture and the 65th anniversary of the University of Ibadan Alumni Association, Buaratai criticized those who called for his removal during his tenure, asserting that such demands were influenced by personal biases rather than a fair assessment of his performance. Buratai went on to express his belief that the Ninth National Assembly’s calls for the dismissal of the Service Chiefs were an attempt to undermine democracy by involving the military in political matters. He emphasized the need for objective discussions on national security issues, focusing on pertinent aspects rather than personal prejudices. Furthermore, Buratai urged political figures, public servants, and civil servants to uphold the highest ethical standards by combatting the corruption that has plagued the nation’s political landscape for decades. He highlighted the prevalence of public fund misappropriation, bribery, and embezzlement, which divert resources from essential services and lead to public disillusionment. In addition, he called upon politicians to be more transparent and accountable, as the absence of accountability has eroded public trust and hindered the country’s development. He emphasized the importance of politicians delivering on their promises made during election campaigns to restore public confidence.

Army Conducts Field Training Exercise to Address Insecurity in Akwa Ibom

The 2 Brigade, Nigerian Army on Friday inaugurated Exercise Still Waters III in Essien-Udim Local Government Area in Akwa Ibom, to tackle all forms of security threats in the state. Brig.-Gen. Ken Chigbu, Commander, 2 Brigade, described the exercise as an annual field training event aimed at bringing together all the security agencies in the state to sharpen their skills on the rudiments of internal security operations. Chigbu expressed hope that it would provide an opportunity for joint efforts to tackle the emerging security threats in the state especially during yuletide. He said that the 2 Brigade in collaboration with other sister security agencies in the state have supported the State Government through both kinetic and non-kinetic approaches to effectively tackle the threats be-devilling the state. According to him, “the event could not have come at a better time than now when there are growing concerns about the several security challenges confronting our dear state and nation at large’’. The commander said that the brigade, under the leadership of the General Officer Commanding 6 Division Nigerian Army, Maj.-Gen. Jamal Abdussalam was currently undergoing unprecedented changes. He noted that the brigade and indeed the Division have continued to benefit immensely from the Chief of Army Staff’s Command Philosophy of transforming the Nigerian Army into a well-trained, equipped and highly motivated force. He thanked the heads of other security agencies for their synergy and support in fighting insecurity in the state as well as the Akwa Ibom Government for the support given to security agencies. In his remarks, Gov. Umo Eno commended the brigade for collaborating with other security agencies to ensure adequate security in the state especially in the area of intelligence sharing. Eno represented by his Deputy, Sen. Akon Eyankenyi, also commended the brigade for siting its base in Ikot Afanag, “a volatile area ravaged by the activities of the Eastern Security Network (ESN) of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB)’’. He said that the presence had restored peace and normalcy in the area and many displaced persons had returned to their communities. He pledged commitment to deepening cooperation with the brigade to ensure that Akwa Ibom people and other residents enjoy maximum security and maintain its status as one of the most peaceful and secured states in the country. The highlight of the event were crowd dispersal drills, aerial surveillance/support for the flag-off event by the Nigerian Air Force, presentation of souvenirs and medical outreach. 

Deadly Communal Clashes Erupt in Osun Leaves 8 Dead, Homes In Ruins

In a tragic turn of events, communal clashes between the residents of Ilobu and Ifon communities in Osun State have left about eight people dead, with several houses razed to the ground. The violence erupted on Thursday, leading to a significant loss of life, destruction of property, and a wave of fear and panic among the affected residents. The conflict escalated to a point where even security operatives found it challenging to access the embattled communities, and they remained stationed at the entrances. Sadly, some of those who lost their lives during the clashes were struck by stray bullets fired by the security forces deployed to quell the unrest. Chief Leke Ogunsola, the Otun-Jagun of Ilobu, speaking on behalf of the Ilobu community, revealed that four lives, including that of an innocent baby, were lost on their side during the crisis. Meanwhile, Prince Jide Akinyooye, representing the Ifon community, disclosed that numerous houses were set ablaze during the violent attack on their town. The root cause of the conflict was traced back to a land dispute exacerbated by a gazette that ceded portions of land belonging to Ifon to Ilobu during the tenure of former Governor Rauf Aregbesola. Tensions simmered, and despite efforts to avoid retaliation, the situation escalated to a dangerous level. In response to the dire situation, Governor Ademola Adeleke swiftly intervened, issuing a directive that prohibited residents of both communities from accessing the disputed land. He emphasized that anyone found on the contested territory would be arrested and prosecuted. The state government has assumed control over the disputed land, and the Governor has urged community leaders to come together to seek a peaceful resolution. The crisis has forced numerous residents of Ilobu and Ifon to flee their homes in fear for their safety. The situation has also prompted the evacuation of corps members serving in the affected areas by the state government. Security personnel, including soldiers, DSS operatives, and police officers, have been deployed to the entrances of the two communities to maintain order. The violence reached such a level that a new police patrol van was burnt by the warring factions, and several police officers were injured in the line of duty. The situation is particularly challenging, as the conflicting parties have accused the police of taking sides in the dispute. To curb further escalation, the Osun State government declared a curfew in the two affected local government areas of Irepodun and Orolu. This measure aims to restore peace, protect lives, and prevent further bloodshed as authorities work to find a lasting solution to the underlying issues fueling the conflict.  

Bandits Attack in Zamfara: Emir’s son, six others abducted, one killed

In yet another distressing incident, armed bandits targeted the headquarters of Bungudu Local Government Area in Zamfara State on Monday, resulting in one fatality and the abduction of seven individuals. The armed assailants reportedly invaded the town with lethal weaponry, launching sporadic gunfire that claimed the life of one person. A resident of Bungudu, Ishaq Bungudu, recounted the horrifying event to Channels Television. He disclosed that among those abducted were Abdulrahman Hassan, the son of the Emir of Bungudu, and Abubakar S/Fada Bungudu, a former State Programme Officer of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD). The recurring attacks on the local government headquarters have raised concerns, especially given its proximity to the state capital, Gusau. Ishaq Bungudu implored Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal to urgently appoint security aides to address the escalating security challenges. He expressed frustration with the lack of official response and noted that the absence of security support has compounded the crisis. Bungudu highlighted a bandits’ enclave situated near one community on the outskirts of the town, which he believes is linked to the continuous attacks. He questioned the efficacy of security agencies in dislodging the bandits and dismantling their hideout. Despite the community’s knowledge of this enclave, the security situation remains precarious. The headquarters of Bungudu Local Government is approximately 21 kilometers from the state capital, Gusau. The area has witnessed a series of attacks in recent times, including the killing of four policemen last month and another police officer in a separate incident. However, efforts to reach the Zamfara State Police Command spokesperson, ASP Yazid Abubakar, for further information were unsuccessful as he did not respond to multiple phone calls. The unfortunate recurrence of such attacks emphasizes the pressing need for enhanced security measures to safeguard the lives and well-being of residents in Zamfara State.

Security Threats: Nigeria’s Police Chief plans Special Intervention Squad

The Acting Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has unveiled a strategic initiative to establish a Special Intervention Squad (SIS) aimed at addressing security challenges across the country. Egbetokun made this announcement during a courtesy call on Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State at the Government House on Saturday. Egbetokun sought the Kano state government’s support for the success of this initiative, as Kano is one of the chosen pilot states for the implementation of the Special Intervention Squad. He explained, “We are introducing the Special Intervention Squad (SIS) to swiftly respond to crises and violent crimes in Nigeria. This dedicated squad will be readily deployable to manage these challenges.” The IGP emphasized that the effectiveness of the new squad hinges on the cooperation and support extended by the Kano state government. He assured that the squad would consist of well-trained personnel, equipped with modern facilities, and provided with adequate remuneration to effectively combat security threats. Addressing Governor Yusuf, Egbetokun stated, “We have selected Kano state as a pilot state for this program. The success of this initiative largely depends on the support we receive from Your Excellency. I humbly urge you to consider this as a request from the Nigerian Police to Governor Yusuf.” In response, Governor Yusuf praised the commitment demonstrated by the current police management in tackling challenges like banditry, kidnapping, and armed robbery. He commended the positive impact of effective policing in Kano state, contributing significantly to the reduction of security issues since the new administration took office. Yusuf reiterated the state government’s commitment to support the police in their efforts to maintain law and order. He emphasized the positive relationship between the government and police authorities, highlighting joint efforts to address various security concerns. The governor also called on the IGP to extend support in the state’s fight against drug abuse, armed robbery, and other criminal activities.
