Kaduna Electric Intensifies Network Maintenance For Improved Power Supply

The management of Kaduna Electric has said it is continuing with the maintenance work on some of its 33KV feeders across its network in order to guarantee improvement in quality of power supply to its customers.  Some of the 33KV feeders the maintenance work has since commenced on include; Water Works, Rigasa, Gonin Gora, Olam and Unguwan Boro. Others are 33KV Abakpa and Doka in Kaduna as well as 33KV PZ in Zaria. A statement issued by the company’s Head of Corporate Communication, Abdulazeez Abdullahi, quoted the Chief Technical Officer (CTO), Engr. Lawal Aliyu Mashi, as saying the maintenance work on the feeders entail replacement of weak jumpers, bad cross arms and pot insulators.  It also includes tree trimming, aligning lengthy and sagged spans and retensioning them. The maintenance will also see to the replacement of bad poles and under sized conductors.  The CTO said the maintenance work is near completion on 33KV Water Works, Rigasa, Unguwan Boro, Abakpa while that on Gonin Gora, Olam and others are ongoing and will be completed before month end. The maintenance work he said is being done in a phsaed manner which targets other feeders in other parts of Kaduna, Sokoto, Zamfara and Kebbi States. Kaduna Electric therefore urged customers to reciprocate by paying the bills on time and in full to ensure uninterrupted services. It reiterated its commitment to exceptional service delivery in its franchise states with the support of all stakeholders.

The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has warned electricity generating and distribution companies over the poor distribution of electricity to Nigerians stressing that the government will no longer listen to their excuses. Adelabu, who made this known to Discos and generating companies during a meeting Saturday in Abuja, said the meeting was to find a lasting solution to the issues surrounding power distribution. According to a statement signed by the Minister’s Special Adviser, Strategic Communication and Media Relations Bolaji Tunji, Adelabu said: “We called this meeting to learn from you and the only way to salvage a bad situation is to understand the real issues on the ground. “Power is one of the most important things we need to energize the economy in terms of achieving the desired economic growth and Industrial development. ”The President has identified the power sector as a major driver of economic growth; therefore no excuse will be entertained for non-performance.” The minister also said that the meeting will become regular to create a stable and accessible environment that will enable discussions surrounding the generating, transmitting, and distribution value chain of electricity to be reviewed and decisions reached. He added that this development will make an impact in the power sector within two to three years.

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) says the national grid operated for 400 days without collapsing. According to a statement signed by the principal Manager of Public Affairs TCN, Ndidi Mbah, it showed that the country is on the path to achieving stability in the electricity sector. Nigeria’s electricity generation has been between 4,000 to 5,000 Mega-Watts despite investments in the power sector. Last year, it crashed from the 6,336.52 megawatts recorded in 2021 to 5,346.82MW. In 2022, the National Grid collapsed eight times, with the last record to be in September.

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has raised the alarm, saying unless customers update their pr-paid meters, they will not be able to recharge with their cards from next The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) that advised Electricity Distribution Companies (DisCos) to assist customers updates their meters. In a message on its Twitter/X handle the Commission explained the process of updating would be free of charge with customers expected to approach the power Distribution Companies (Discos) on how to go about it. “If you have a prepaid meter, it may be time for an update. From November, 2024, you may not be able to recharge your meter. However, updating is easy and free. “Discos shall commence issuance of two free Key Change Tokens (KCTs) which will update your meter,” NERC stated in the message. In addition, it stated that the process will not in any way impact the units in the meters , urging consumers not to be apprehensive. “The update will not affect the units in your meter nor will it make your meter run faster than usual. Contact your Disco for more information,” it said. The NERC warned that failure by electricity customers to update their metering devices would make them face challenges with recharging by next year.

The new Minister of Power, Mr Adebayo Adelabu has assured that the federal government will empower Nigerians through stable and accessible power. The minister, who gave the assurance when he assumed office on Monday in Abuja stressed that every home, industry, school, and business will benefit from the government’s efforts. To achieve the feat, Adelabu said the ministry will leverage the Nigerian Electricity Act of 2023 to boost the power supply in the country. The Nigerian Electricity Act, 2023 provides a comprehensive legal and institutional framework for the operation of a fully privatized, cost and service-reflective tariff contract. The Act also provides a rule-based competitive electricity market in Nigeria and repeals the following Acts: Electric Power Sector Reform Act, 2005. According to the minister, the ministry will diligently provide optimal solutions for Nigeria’s power needs across the nation. He said the task was not merely a requirement, but an expectation from both the President and the Nigerian populace who had endured years of power challenges. “This responsibility weighs heavily upon us, and it is with conviction, divine guidance, and the support of President Tinubu, the National Assembly, government agencies, and Nigerians that I pledge my commitment to achieve success in the power sector. “Recognising that there are numerous deserving and qualified Nigerians for this role, I am truly humbled that the President has entrusted me with this vital task, as we collectively envision the growth and prosperity of our nation,” he said.
