Peter Obi and a buffoon called Monday Okpebholo
By UGO ONUOHA Who is a buffoon? I will not put my thumb on the scale so that I will not inject my personal bias and anger in the definition of a buffoon. I will simply ask Meta AI. Please AI who is a buffoon? “A buffoon is a person who behaves in a silly, foolish, or absurd way, often causing amusement or annoyance. The term can imply someone who: acts foolishly or absurdly; makes a spectacle of themselves; lacks seriousness or judgment; [and/or] engages in clownish or ridiculous behaviour”. AI elaborates by saying that “In modern usage, ‘buffoon’ can be used to describe someone who is seen as ridiculous, incompetent, or silly, often in a way that’s entertaining or annoying”. It went on to illustrate: “He’s such a buffoon on social media, always posting ridiculous videos”. Which one of these descriptions does not fit the governor of Edo state, Monday Okpebholo? He is silly. He acts foolishly. He is absurd in conduct and utterance. He causes amusement and annoyance at the same time. He makes a spectacle of himself. He never appears to be a serious person. Indications are that he is a dullard. Okpebholo lacks good judgment. He’s ridiculous. He is clownish. So far, there is no evidence that he will be a competent governor of an otherwise sophisticated state like Edo. His nomination as the ruling party’s [All Progressives Congress, APC’s] governorship candidate in the last election in Edo state came as a shock to those who knew his antecedents. His stomping for the office was absurd and a depressing spectacle to behold. He struggled to articulate his promises to the electorate. His grasp of the English language was challenged, and sadly continues to be challenged even as a governor. There was no evidence either that he was grounded in his mother tongue. Even if he was, how many of the native languages would he have spoken during the campaigns given the diverse languages of the state. Using Nigeria’s special English or pigeon [pidgin English] also appeared a bridge too far for him to cross. He was a disaster as a nominee for a high office. He was a greater disaster as a candidate. And now, daily he is unravelling as a governor. In spite of being a former senator of the federal republic, Monday Okpebholo is neither literate in spoken words nor in written figures. Do you want evidence? Search for videos where he spoke. Okpebholo will only be caught dead addressing any audience extempore. Wherever and whenever he does be ready to squirm and to hold your breath for the duration of the exercise. Thankfully, they are all usually short video clips. He is no better with a written speech. He is sure to mangle the words and end up being incomprehensible. Some months ago, Okpebholo could not pronounce the sum total of the 2025 budget of Edo state during its presentation to the house of assembly. He was the presenter. Before the APC, budget presentation was a serious business. At least, there used to be a veneer of seriousness. Until it stopped being so when the lawmakers in our national assembly started heralding the presentation of Nigeria’s national budgets with the rendering of ‘On your mandate…’, the partisan political song of Alhaji Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Nigeria’s president. In Edo the budget figure that was beyond the pay grade of Okpebholo was the same he is supposed to superintend its implementation. Pray, how do you implement what you cannot figure [pun fully intended] out. He tried three times and he failed three times. His subsequent failures were worse than the previous ones. That was how bad he was. And that’s how bad he still is. Okpebholo typifies the typical Nigerian ruler at all levels. The bar is extremely low, encourages fawning, cronyism, and hypocrisy. And we still keep wondering how our country and its sub-nationals keep moving forward in reverse gear. We keep wondering how our country has remained the poverty capital of the world. We keep wondering how and why about 75% or 161 million of our compatriots are today not sure of where their next meal will come from. Why do we wonder with a plethora of the type of Okpebholo in leadership [rulership really] positions, in the driver’s seat across board. Before his accession to the Edo state Governor’s Mansion, Okpebholo was a senator. In that role he was not much known for his contributions at plenary or sponsorship of bills or strong advocacy for his constituents and senatorial district. There’s no evidence, but he was probably adept in joining other senators in padding the budget for his personal benefit or for the good of his district. That may have partly accounted for his promotion to be the chief executive of Edo state, a state that had been governed by politically sagacious personages including John Odigie-Oyegun, a former chairman of the APC; an academic and the first First Class graduate of law in 1975 of the University of Nigeria, Enugu campus, Prof. Oserheimen Osunbor [the first Nigerian law student to achieve this feat]; a stormy petrel labour leader, Adams Oshiomhole, who was also chairman of the APC, and now a vibrant senator; as well as a well educated Lucky Igbinedion, one of the sons of the billionaire Esama of Bini Kingdom, Chief Gabriel Igbinedion. Like his fellow party man elsewhere, Okpebholo’s academic career is muddled in controversies, with his political detractors attributing even his marginal success to association with the notorious miracle centre. Miracle or magic centres are special but illegal examination centres designed for those who must be assisted to cheat to pass the joint admissions and matriculation board [JAMB] examination, a prerequisite for admission to tertiary institutions in Nigeria. Even then, his alleged school certificate which was posted online presumably by his political enemies read like a glorification of the ‘D’ poor grade. There’s no doubt that Governor Okpebholo passed through the senate but the senate, the upper chamber
Court dismisses Philip Shaibu’s N50bn suit against ex-Gov. Obaseki, others

The Federal High Court in Abuja, on Monday dismissed a N50 billion fundamental rights enforcement suit filed by Philip Shaibu, former Deputy Governor of Edo, against ex-Gov. Godwin Obaseki and others Justice Peter Lifu, in a ruling, dismissed the suit following an application to withdraw the suit by Anita Oteh, who appeared for Shaibu. Upon resumed hearing in the matter, Oteh informed the court that parties in the suit had settled their differences, hence, the need to withdraw the suit. However, Aliyu Abdulkadir, who represented the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF), the 4th defendants in the suit, told the court that he was not aware of the settlement. According to him, if there is any settlement, we should be informed so that we are well guided. “However, we are not opposed to the application for withdrawal and will also not be asking for a cost, but I will make a simple request,” he said. Abdulkadir then prayed the court to dismissed the suit. Oteh disagreed with Abdulkadir’s request, urging the court to grant their application for the withdrawal of the suit. Justice Lifu, in his ruling, held that, having joined issues in the matter, the proper thing was to dismiss the case. “In view of the fact that issues have been joined in this matter, this suit is hereby dismissed in its entirety”, he ruled. In the writ of summons, had sued Edo State Governor; Inspector-General (I-G) of Police; Director, Department of State Services (DSS), AGF and Attorney General of Edo as 1st to 5th defendants respectively. In the suit marked FHC/ABJ/CS/914/2024 dated July 4, 2024 but filed July 19, 2024 by his counsel, Egwuaba Reuben, Shaibu sought right reliefs. The ex-deputy governor sought an order of the court awarding the sum of N50 billion to him for aggravated and exemplary damages against the defendants to be paid jointly for the illegal and unconstitutional violation of his fundamental rights. He also sought an order of perpetual injunction, restraining the defendants and their agents from further arresting or detaining him, repeating or continuing any act or further acts in violation of his fundamental rights on issues bordering on or connected to facts of the case without the leave of the court. The plaintiff equally sought for the sum of N100 million as the cost of filing the suit. In his witness statement of oath deposed to by himself, Shaibu averred that he was elected deputy governor of Edo and his tenure was to end on Nov. 11, 2024 He however alleged that on instigation of Obaseki and with the aid of the I-G, “I was unlawfully removed from the office before the expiration of my tenure which same issue is a subject of litigation pending before this court.” He further alleged that upon discovery that he had been removed as deputy governor, the I-G withdrew all his security personnel who ought to have protected his life until the expiration of his term in office. Shaibu also said his attention was drawn to a publication on July 2, 2024, wherein the Edo government issued a notice directing the retrieval of 22 official government vehicles in his custody, among others. He, therefore, prayed the court to declare that the attempt by the 1st defendant (Obaseki) to instigate the 2nd to 5th defendants to be arrested was unlawful and amounted to an attempt to infringe on his fundamental rights guaranteed under the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended), among other reliefs. It was observed that no lawyer appeared for the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 5th defendants on Monday. Justice James Omotosho of a sister court had, on July 17, 2024, reinstated Shaibu as deputy governor, three months after the Edo House of Assembly impeached him. Justice Omotosho held that the impeachment by the house was illegal.

Edo Lawmakers Approve Death Sentence for Kidnapping

The Edo State House of Assembly has passed a new law imposing the death penalty for kidnapping. This decision came on Tuesday as lawmakers reviewed the State Kidnapping Prohibition Law 2025. The bill, presented by Majority Leader Charity Aiguobarueghian, was examined clause by clause after a motion was seconded by Minority Leader Henry Okaka, representing Owan East. Previously, the 2013 law provided life imprisonment and property confiscation for those involved in kidnapping. However, the lawmakers decided to introduce stricter punishment by approving the death sentence while maintaining the seizure of properties linked to the crime. In addition to the kidnapping law, the Assembly repealed the Edo State Electricity Law 2022 and established the Edo State Electricity Market, the Edo State Electricity Regulatory Commission, and the Edo Electrification Agency. The lawmakers also confirmed Mrs. Kenny Okojie as the chairman of the governing board of the Edo State Primary Healthcare Development Agency.
Obaseki Says Shaibu Remains Impeached

Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State has reiterated that his deputy, Philip Shaibu, remains impeached, despite a recent court ruling. On Friday, Obaseki responded to a statement attributed to Shaibu, where he warned Permanent Secretaries and Heads of Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) against the possible looting of government properties by political appointees. Obaseki, through his media adviser Crusoe Osagie, urged Edo State workers to dismiss Shaibu’s directives, emphasizing that Shaibu has no authority to issue instructions as he remains impeached. The governor reaffirmed that Shaibu’s removal from office is still in effect, pending the court’s final decision, and that the deputy governor holds no power to interfere with the functioning of state employees. This comes after the Federal High Court in Abuja, in a July ruling, ordered Shaibu’s reinstatement, stating that due process was not followed during his impeachment by the Edo State House of Assembly. The state government and the House of Assembly’s attempt to challenge the court’s decision was dismissed, with costs awarded against them. Obaseki’s administration, however, continues to uphold Shaibu’s impeachment while awaiting the court’s definitive ruling on the matter.
Edo 2024 Guber: Impressive Turnout of Voters

The Edo 2024 gubernatorial election has witnessed an impressive turnout of voters across the state today, as residents turned out in their numbers to exercise their civic duties. By 7:15am when reporters visited polling units within ward 12, residents had trooped out early, signaling a strong desire to shape the future of Edo State. People with disability and octogenarians were given preference. Voting in most wards in Oredo LGA is going on smoothly, and the security situation in most polling units visited remain intact and under control. Several civil society organizations monitoring the elections, including YIAGA Africa and the Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD), commended the peaceful conduct and the large turnout of voters. The Edo 2024 election is seen as a critical moment for the state, with three major political parties amongst others vying for the governorship seat in a race that will shape Edo’s political landscape for the next four years.

Engr. Marvellous Godwins Omobayo has reaffirmed his position as the legitimate Deputy Governor of Edo State, emphasizing that he continues to execute his duties as prescribed by the Nigerian Constitution. Akoko-Edo: An Unmatched History of Loyalty

By Comrade Mayor Samuel Akoko-Edo LGA of Edo State boasts an unparalleled history of loyalty, honesty, and peaceful coexistence. Despite its large population, abundant resources, and extensive landmass, we have consistently supported our neighbors in Edo North. We hold the likes of Etsako politicians, businessmen, and other influential figures in high regard, respecting their traditional institutions. In Edo Central, politicians and residents alike have our unwavering support. In Edo South, we have also shown wholehearted support. Yet, we have been unjustly treated by our closest neighbors, the Etsako. Under Oshiomole’s leadership, we endured humiliation through political appointments and party candidacies. As we are still reeling from these inhumane treatments, Philip Shaibu, Oshiomole’s blood brother, has continued the dehumanization of our people. What is our offense? This question remains unanswered, except by Rt. Hon. Comrade Philip Shaibu. I have always believed that loyalty pays, serving pays, and reliability pays. If there is any race, ethnicity, or group with the same heritage and geographical placement that has shown unwavering loyalty to the people of Etsako and Edo State in general, it is the people of Akoko-Edo. Even though we are not born as slaves or second-class citizens, out of love and respect, we have served the Etsako in Edo North and across Edo State. Why, then, would anyone continue to mistreat those who have refused confrontation, even when provoked? Why do Oshiomole and Philip Shaibu believe it is the birthright of Etsako to determine the destiny of Akoko-Edo, Owan, and Esan people? We have tolerated so much, and it is time to say, ENOUGH IS ENOUGH. Yes, we may not be as blessed as Estako, which has all the supposed decentralized government institutions spread across Owan, Akoko-Edo, and Estako, but all politically centralized in Etsako. You have reduced us to mere monkeys, throwing us bananas whenever you feel like it. You callously prevented Deacon Obende Domigo from going to the Senate when you, Oshiomole, was the governor, Philip Shaibu was in the House of Reps, and Estako had a minister, only to replace him with another Etsako man. As if that was not enough, you delivered the final blow, appointing Philip Shaibu as Deputy Governor, Senator, and Minister, all from the same LGA in Estako. Today, the same enemies of Akoko-Edo are senators and ministers, yet they are doing everything possible to strip us of the only remnant we have been left with by a benevolent power. This must stop. Nothing must happen to our brother. Akoko-Edo has long paid its dues, and we deserve to be happy, even if just once. At this critical moment, I call on all sons and daughters of Akoko-Edo, at home and abroad, to rise in defense of our son, our brother, and our first-ever executive position. I urge sociocultural and political groups to issue press statements. This is not the time to be party loyalists because, to see light in this provocative moment, we must come together, irrespective of party affiliation. Comrade Mayor Samuel Son of the Soil – Enwan Akoko-Edo LGA, Edo State.
Former Speaker Bright Omokhodion withdraws from APC governorship race

The former Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Bright Omokhodion, has officially withdrawn from the race for the governorship on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC). Omokhodion, a top-level contender from Edo Central Senatorial District, announced his decision citing gross discontent with the screening committee’s skewed screening process of APC governorship candidates. The withdrawal was made public in a statement personally signed by Omokhodion. His words: “Compatriots, I wish you a blessed season’s best. It has become imperative to inform you that due to my gross discontent with the SKEWED screening process of APC governorship candidates by the screening committee, I am withdrawing from the 2024 Edo Governorship race. “This decision is purely the outcome of consultation with my campaign team; we have jumped many hurdles and impediments in our quest but regrettably reached this decision after a stormy meeting. “I must thank all of you for sharing in my vision and desire for a greater and productive Edo of our dreams. I will in due course advise our followers of the next line of action, while we continue to support the aspirations of my party, APC. “Once again, thank you for keeping the SMILES-VISION project alive.”
