The Acting Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Dr. Olayemi Michael Cardoso, on Friday, formally assumed duty pending his confirmation by the Senate. This is as the Central Bank officially confirmed the resignation of former CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, recently appointed Cardoso, and other Deputy Governors.    This follows the resignation of Mr. Godwin Emefiele as Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). A statement by the Director, Corporate Communications, Dr. Isa AbdulMumin which was made available to journalists on Friday in Abuja, added that the Deputy-Governors-Designate have also assumed duties in acting capacities, sequel to the formal resignation of former Deputy Governors, Mr. Folashodun Shonubi, Mrs. Aishah Ahmad, Mr. Edward Lametek Adamu, and Dr. Kingsley Obiora. Dr. Cardoso and his colleagues subscribed to the relevant oaths of office at a brief ceremony held at the Bank’s Head Office in Abuja, on Friday and have since settled down to the task of administering monetary and financial sector policies of the Federal Government. An Economic and Development Policy Advisor, Financial Sector Leader, former Chairman Citi Nigeria and Commissioner for Economic Planning and Budget in Lagos, Cardoso brings over three decades of managerial experience on board. He is an alumnus of Aston University, Birmingham, United Kingdom, where he studied managerial and administrative studies. He also holds a Master’s degree in Public Administration from the Harvard Kennedy School, United States of America. It would be recalled that Dr. Cardoso and his colleagues were appointed by President Bola Tinubu to their respective positions at the Bank on September 15, 2023, subject to their confirmation by the Senate. Meanwhile, The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has confirmed the resignation of Mr Godwin Emefiele as its governor, three months after being suspended from office by President Bola Tinubu.

The Department of State Services (DSS) has kept mum on the reported arrest of the Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) in charge of Financial System Stability, Aisha Ahmad. The media has been awash on Sunday with reports that the secret police apprehended Ahmad over her alleged involvement in the acquisition of shares in Polaris Bank, Titan Bank/Union Bank. It was gathered that the banker is being quizzed on how $300 million meant to complete the acquisition of Union Bank was raised by Titan Bank. Although the details of the arrest are still sketchy, the secret police and the apex bank have not reacted to the reports. According to reports on Channels Television on Sunday, when contacted, DSS spokesman, Peter Afunanya, said that he cannot confirm or deny that Ahmad is in their custody or has been invited for questioning. He stated that in the course of any investigation, people can be invited for questioning and those invitations are carried out within the ambit of the law. This is coming about two months after the secret service arrested Ahmad’s former boss at the CBN, Godwin Emefiele. He has been in the DSS custody since then. Emefiele, the suspended Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, was first charged with possession of a firearm but was later charged with N6.9 billion fraud.

History was made on Thursday when the Kano State House of Assembly, confirmed Justice Dije Aboki as the state’s substantive Chief Judge (CJ) of the State. This followed the consideration of a letter forwarded to the assembly by Governor Abba Kabir-Yusuf and read by the Speaker, Ismail Falgore, during Thursday’s plenary. Governor Abdullahi Ganduje had, in March, sworn in Justice Aboki as the acting Chief Judge of the State. In another development, the Kano State House of Assembly also confirmed three more commissioner-nominees sent to the Assembly by Governor Kabir-Yusuf. The nominees screened are Ibrahim Fagge, Ibrahim Namadi, and Amina Abdullahi -Sani. In his remark after the confirmation, Falgore asked the cleared nominees to justify their appointments by being dedicated to their duties when assigned portfolios. He urged them to complement the efforts of the governor in the development of the State. After the confirmation, the nominees described the opportunity as a call to serve the people of Kano.
